Elizabeth Holmes’ rise and fall as the disgraced founder of Theranos is the subject of the new A24 documentary “You Can See Everything,” which premieres in limited theaters on Oct. 16.
The documentary, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, goes behind the scenes to tell the story of how Holmes, 42, vowed to revolutionize blood testing only to end up a convicted felon.
After a 2022 federal investigation of Theranos labs uncovered critical violations, Holmes, who was just 19 when she founded the biotech company, was found guilty of four counts of wire fraud and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
“You Can See Everything” also delves into Holmes’ private life. The movie includes footage of Holmes with fiancé William “Billy” Evans and their two children that was shot in 2023 during her final days of freedom before she reported to a Texas federal prison.
According to the filmmakers, they revealed at a Los Angeles screening of the doc, Evans has yet to see the documentary. Fielder noted that after Holmes went to prison, Evans “started trying to exert a level of control over the process” that made it difficult to continue filming and “communication broke down.”
In February 2025, Holmes broke her silence to give her first prison interview to People. She described life behind bars, which includes two visits a week from Evans and their kids, as “hell and torture.”
“The people I love the most have to walk away as I stand here, a prisoner, and my reality sinks in,” Holmes said.

Holmes and Evans Got Engaged in 2018, a Year After Meeting
Holmes met Evans at a charity event in Oct. 2017, she told People in her 2025 prison interview.
A year after meeting, Evans popped the question by presenting Holmes with a silver snake ring he bought at a Taylor Swift “Reputation” tour concert.
“I asked him 20 times if he wanted to spend his life with me,” Holmes said. “There were a million reasons why not.”
Evans Spoke of His Love for Holmes in a Pre-Trial Letter
Evans poured his heart out about Holmes in an emotional pre-trial letter to the judge in her case, reported The Independent.
In his 12-page letter, which also included photos of the couple, Evans wrote that he fell instantly in love with Holmes, whom he called “Liz.”
“I was captivated by her childish wonder and authenticity,” he wrote, adding “She listened more intently than anyone I had ever met.”
Evans praised Holmes’ vision, writing, “Her capacity to change the world is limitless.”
He also included the story of how Holmes competed in a Golden Gate Bridge ocean swim event in 2021 while pregnant with William.
“There were fifty reasons I thought it was a bad idea, the sharks, the tides, her complete inexperience swimming post age 14,” Evans wrote.
“You would think by now I would learn to not discount her perseverance,” he wrote.
Holmes and Evans Share 2 Kids
Holmes gave birth to the couple’s first child, son William, shortly before her fraud trial began.
She and Evans welcomed their second child, daughter Invicta, in 2023.
According to People, Holmes sat in the back seat of a Ford Expedition pumping breast milk for three-month-old Invicta as she approached the prison gates to begin her term.
Holmes ‘Always Wanted to Be a Mother’
While speaking to People, Holmes addressed speculation that she and Evans schemed to start a family to depict Holmes as more sympathetic so she might avoid time in prison.
“I know how the optics look, but I always wanted to be a mother,” Holmes said. “I truly did not think I would ever be convicted or found guilty. I kept talking to my lawyers and they also assured me we would never get this far.”
“It wasn’t planned and I can’t worry about what others think. It’s just when the timing happened,” Holmes added.
