Paul McCartney has just ooooone little critique for the upcoming Beatles biopics.
The legendary rock star sat down with comedian Amy Poehler for the latest episode of her podcast “Good Hang.” He revealed that he had a note for director Sam Mendes, whose highly anticipated series of four films about the groundbreaking band is slated to be released in 2028.
McCartney lamented to Poehler that while all members of The Beatles are roughly the same height, his character appears to be shorter than that of John Lennon’s.
“He sent me a picture — a still from the filming they were doing, and they’re crossing the Abbey Road crossing,” McCartney said. “The Paul character is markedly smaller!”
McCartney said he just had to pick up the phone.
“I texted him, Sam,” McCartney said during the episode, released Oct. 13. “‘Don’t do this.’”
For the biopics, McCartney is being played by Paul Mescal who, according to his IMDB page, is 5’11” — not at all a short king. Harris Dickinson, who will star as John Lennon, is just pretty darn tall. His height is listed as 6’2” on his IMDB page.
Barry Keoghan will play Ringo Starr in the films while Joseph Quinn will appear as George Harrison.
In the podcast episode, McCartney admits that he’s “got a thing” about height.
“We were all the same height and Ringo was a bit smaller,” he explains. “(Director Sam Taylor-Johnson) did a film called ‘Nowhere Boy,’ and the John character, — who she later married — he’s bigger than me in the film!”
“Nowhere Boy,” released in 2009, featured Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lennon while Thomas Brodie-Sangster played McCartney.
McCartney, who said he is still good friends with the director, recalled that she gave him an explanation.
“She said, ‘This is a movie. It’s not a documentary,’” a disgruntled McCartney says. “I thought, ‘Well, I don’t like that explanation.’ But I couldn’t do anything because by now she’d made the film.”
He added: “There was I, little Paul. And, you know, John, the great big hero. And it’s like — no! It’s not true.”
