โCatch Me Upโ is a TODAY series where our experts and journalists bring readers up to speed on the dayโs biggest headlines.
After sharing an unsettling teaser from his upcoming documentary about Theranos founder and convicted felon Elizabeth Holmes, director Nathan Fielder has released the full trailer that shows the businesswoman still maintaining she did nothing wrong.
โYou Can See Everything,โ also from filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, follows Holmes during her final days as a free woman with partner Billy Evans and their children before she entered prison in 2023.
The trailer reveals that Fielder moved into Holmesโ house for the documentary.
โI think this is the moment in time to capture this story before Iโm gone,โ she seemingly tells the comedian at one point.
Evans is also featured. Fielder questions him in the clip about the start of his relationship with Holmes, asking Evans if he can truly trust her.
Even Fielder wonders if Holmes is being honest with him during their chats.
โThatโs because I donโt have anything to hide,โ she tells him as ominous music grows louder.
Just a few hours after Fielder shared the link for the trailer, it racked up over 2 million views on YouTube. Interest in โYou Can See Everything,โ out in theaters Oct. 16, has continued to grow since it had its worldwide premiere at a secret screening during the Telluride Film Festival.
Critics raved about the movie, which has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and teased its unpredictability.
So, what can you expect from the buzzy documentary?
Rebecca Keegan of NBC News Digital was in attendance when โYou Can See Everythingโ was screened Sept. 6 at the festival.
Read on to find out what she shared about the jaw-dropping reactions from those in the crowd.
What Happened at the โYou Can See Everythingโ Telluride Film Festival Screening?
โYou Can See Everythingโ has gone viral since it was screened at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month, with attendees having strong reactions.
โThere were audible gasps and โno waysโ consistently throughout this almost three-hour film,โ Keegan told NBC News correspondent Erin McLaughlin on TODAY Sept. 8.
Holmes was the founder and CEO of the tech startup Theranos, which promised to revolutionize blood testing. She was found guilty of four counts of wire fraud in January 2022 after a federal investigation uncovered critical violations in a Theranos lab following reports that the technology did not work and could deliver faulty results.
The new documentary features footage of Holmes with partner Evans and their two children at a rental home in San Diego before Holmesโ sentence began. She is scheduled to be released in 2031.
โI think part of the film is exploring this question of Elizabeth Holmesโs perception of reality and about things that sheโs done,โ Keegan said.
The teaser trailer released by the studio A24 on Sept. 6 showed a wide-eyed Holmes awkwardly only inches away from Fielderโs face as she spoke to him in one scene.
โIโm not that person,โ Holmes said in the clip. โI can promise you that. I donโt have anything to deceive you on. Of course, Iโm not deceiving you. Iโm engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? Thereโs no reason for me to do that.โ
โOK. All right. OK, good chat,โ Fielder replies.
The two then stare at each other for an uncomfortable duration.
โYouโre being real right now?โ Fielder asks.
โIโm always being real,โ Holmes replies.
Keegan described the โstrange feelingโ produced by the interactions between Fielder and Holmes in the film.
โFielder is very much a character in the film, and in some ways, itโs him trying to understand whether he believes Elizabeth Holmes or not,โ Keegan said.
โIโm struggling to this day to understand exactly what I experienced,โ Fielder said during the post-screening Q&A, according to Keegan. โI donโt know why they want me there. Iโm a weird guy. I donโt get it. That messed with my head.โ
The conversations between Holmes and โThe Rehearsalโ star are reportedly not the only surreal moments in the documentary. The film also includes an A-list Hollywood actor reenacting Fielderโs conversations with Holmes from prison. Fielder asked the attendees at the screening not to reveal the actorโs identity, according to Keegan.
NBC News reached out to Holmes for comment, but did not hear back. Holmes also shared the movie trailer on her X account on Sept. 6 and wrote, โIโm always being real.โ
โYou Can See Everythingโ is the latest screen adaptation of the saga involving Holmes. HBO released the documentary โThe Inventorโ about Holmes in 2019, and then Amanda Seyfried played her in the 2022 Hulu series โThe Dropout.โ
