Malcolm-Jamal Warnerโs widow honored the late โCosby Showโ star with a moving Instagram post on what wouldโve been his 56th birthday on Aug. 18.
Tenisha Warner shared a picture of the coupleโs 9-year-old daughter standing in a room filled with stuffed animals, while a โHappy Birthdayโ banner hung on a wall.
โEvery year we spent his birthday at home, just the three of us,โ Warner wrote. โHe always said that was all he needed because it brought him the most joy to begin every new year of his life with us. The only other guests were our daughterโs dolls and stuffed animals. Every single one was lined up in the dining room to celebrate with him.
Warner also did not shy away from the agony she still feels about her husbandโs death.
โToday is his birthday, and we are breaking as we try to learn how to be here without him,โ she wrote.
โIโm not hiding how much this hurts. My gift to him includes my pain, because pain this deep only exists where love ran that deep. So today Iโm sharing this with you who loved him too, the gift he gave us: he loved us with his whole heart, in ways I will never know again.โ
Malcolm-Jamal Warner died July 2025 at the age of 54 in an accidental drowning while on vacation in Costa Rica with his wife and daughter. According to Costa Ricaโs Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), he died as a result of asphyxia by submersion.
In September 2025, Tenisha Warner made her first public comments about her husbandโs death as their anniversary approached while also announcing the creation of the charities River & Ember and The Warner Family Foundation in his honor.
โI can still hear my husbandโs laugh, still feel the way he made room for every part of me โ every tear, every dream,โ she wrote, in part, on Instagram.
โTogether we carry the legacy my husband and I beganโ one that nurtures childrenโs inner light and gives young artists the freedom to create outside the lines,โ she added.
In July, Tenisha Warner sued Malcolm-Jamal Warnerโs mother, Pamela Warner, for breach of contract involving the coupleโs prenuptial agreement, which she claims they signed eight days before marrying in 2022. The lawsuit says the actor did not fulfill the obligations of the prenup, while Tenisha Warner claims that he โagreed to purchase and maintain a term life insurance policy on his life in the amount of $1,000,000,โ with her as the โsole beneficiary.โ
However, she says he never bought the life insurance policy for him or for her, even though they had an agreement. Her complaint also says the actor agreed to pay her $16,000 a year on their anniversary, create a retirement account and pay her a salary of $5,000 per month as his โchief of staffโ but never did so.
The complaint claims that Tenisha Warner is owed โno less than $1,276,042.46,โ plus interest and attorneyโs fees and cost.
Pamela Warner has also publicly mourned his death.
โMalcolm was an exceptional husband, father, and son โ a man deeply in love with life, his wife and his daughter,โ she wrote in a statement posted on Instagram in August 2025. โHe was not only my son, but also my teacher, coach, confidant, business partner, and best friend. He was the son that his father was immensely proud of and loved fiercely and unconditionally.โ
TODAY.com has reached out to Pamela Warner for comment. According to a statement she shared with USA Today, a settlement has been reached. The statement said claims that Pamela sought to prevent her granddaughter from receiving financial support are untrue.
