โLove Island USAโ fans donโt seem to be buying former contestant Alannah Keyserโs newest apology for her previous use of a racial slur, which ultimately led to her dismissal from the show.
In a TikTok video on June 27, Keyser addressed a resurfaced clip, in which she was seen using a racial slur while singing the lyrics to the 2019 Roddy Rich song โThe Box.โ Keyser told viewers that the video was โfrom six years ago, and that word is just not in my vocabulary anymore.โ
โIโm sorry to whoever saw that video and has been offended by it,โ Keyser said in the TikTok video. โThat was never my intention.โ
Keyser, a 21-year-old film student from Miami, also said that she doesnโt support โracism or discrimination of any kind, and I never have.โ
โThis has definitely been a learning lesson for me, and it sucks that I didnโt get a chance to really show my personality and who I am,โ she said.
Peacock did not immediately respond to TODAY.com requests for comment.
The video has received thousands of comments from viewers, many of whom said they found her apology insufficient.
โGenuinely the worst apology Iโve ever seen,โ said one TikTok user, who received more than 12,000 likes for the comment.
Keyser, who joined the show as a Casa Amor bombshell during the June 21 episode of the steamy series, stopped appearing on the program after the June 25 episode, Peacock confirmed to TODAY.com. The new video is her first that addresses the controversy. Several fans criticized her TikTok apology, saying that the racial slur was never acceptable to use, and that she should have known better six years ago.
โTo be saying that in 2020 is actually even more wild,โ said another TikTok user.
Others took issue with the way in which she appeared to avoid kissing cast members KC Chandler and Sincere Rhea, who are both Black, during the showโs heart rate challenge. Keyser did not address her behavior in the challenge during the apology video, but wrote in the caption that her โchats/kisses with the other boys were unfortunately not aired.โ
โthis falls completely flat when we literally saw her discriminate against the black men on the cast. we have eyes girl,โ one X user said.
Another X user wrote that โItโs not just the fact you said the word, itโs also how you visibly treated the black male contestants differently.โ
Keyser is the latest in a string of โLove Island USAโ cast members who were removed from the show after major controversies. Vasana Montgomery, for example, was featured in an introduction video for Season 8, only to be dismissed from the cast the next day after clips of her using a racial slur resurfaced. And in Season 7, cast members Yulissa Escobar and Cierra Ortega were both separately removed after their previous use of racial slurs came to light.
