Andrew Rannells is giving fans of βGirlsβ an inside look at what they may see when the showβs reboot comes out.
According to Rannells, the idea for the reboot grew after the launch of βGirlsβ star and creator Lena Dunhamβs book, βFamesick,β earlier this year. Rannells said audiences during the book tour were βso excited to see us together on stage.β
βI think (it) maybe kickstarted Lenaβs idea that, βI think maybe this is time,β because we certainly didnβt want to come back before people were ready,β he said Oct. 27 on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle.
Rannells, who played Elijah Krantz on βGirls,β was asked if the reboot would have a different visual look from the original, like βBel-Airβ or βA Different World,β or if it would appear similar to the original, like βSex and the City,β leading him to opine about where the characters may be today.
βI think itβll look and sort of feel the same,β he said. βBut, you know, when we left these characters, they were what about to be mid-20s, late 20s? Theyβre 40 now. So, now we have to sort of explore that. So I think itβs a good time. I think that she chose the right moment. So Iβm really excited.β
Dunham announced the reboot of the Emmy-winning series in a video on Oct. 13 shared on HBO Maxβs social media accounts. In the clip, she hopped on a call with co-stars Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke.
βWe used to spend, like, every summer together, you know, doing this thing that we do, making the show. Is it something that you would want to do again? Are you free next summer?β Dunham asked them.
Rannells, in the announcement, crashed the call to confirm heβd be joining the reboot.
βIβm in, but only βcause you trash cans need constant supervision,β he joked.
βGirlsβ revolved around four 20-something friends living in New York City and ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. In a press release, HBO said production should get underway in 2027 and the show will take place a decade after the events of the final episode from Season 6.
βWe always said we would only return to βGirlsβ if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. Iβve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldnβt quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower,β Dunham said in a statement.
Itβs unclear if Adam Driver, who played the romantic interest of Dunhamβs character, Hannah, will return. TODAY.com had reached out to him for a comment about the revival, but did not hear back.
