Dolly Parton Becomes Most Streamed Artist Worldwide The Day After Her Death

As the world grieves the passing of country icon Dolly Parton, many seem to be turning to her music to heal.

According to entertainment industry data and analytics company Luminate, audio streams of Parton’s music skyrocketed on Aug. 26, the day after the country star died of cancer at 80. That day she became the most streamed artist in the world with 79.7 million on-demand audio streams, the company’s data showed.

Parton’s music received an estimated 46.2 million streams in the U.S. alone. The most popular song was “Jolene” with four million streams, followed by “9 To 5” with 3.6 million streams.

“Islands In The Stream,” Parton’s hit with fellow country star Kenny Rogers, generated 2.9 million streams. And “I Will Always Love You,” which was famously covered by Whitney Houston, came in fourth with 2.8 million streams.

Luminate tracks music consumption data by looking at thousands of data sources, constructing a “musical entity database,” the company says.

Luminate’s data shows streams surged from Aug. 25, when the musician drew 37 million streams worldwide, already a 1,499% boom from the day before. In the U.S., the artist drew 27.7 million streams, a 2,350% increase from the day prior.

Parton passed after “a brief battle with cancer” according to her estate. She died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center with her loved ones by her side.

During her lifetime, Parton was no stranger to mainstream success and remains one of the best-selling country artists of all-time. Her music career, which began in the late 1950s, included 50 studio albums and over 100 million albums sold worldwide, according to Broadcast Music, Inc.

Parton’s music has long been critically acclaimed as well. The musician earned 55 Grammy nominations and 10 wins. In 2011, she was given the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
