Charlamagne Tha God Tells a Craig Melvin Story That Leaves Jenna and Sheinelle in Tears

Charlamagne tha God knows Craig Melvin from way back when.

While appearing on the Aug. 19 episode of TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, the “Breakfast Club” host regaled Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones with a funny tale about Craig back when they were both coming up the ranks in their professions back in South Carolina.

“Craig is one of the most disciplined people,” he said.

Charlamagne then provided a story to illustrate just how disciplined Craig is.

“I remember we used to hang out at this club called V12 in Columbia, South Carolina. And I remember us being, I think it was my birthday party or something, so we’re in the VIP (area), and, you know, we’re just sitting back there cooling, and somebody in the club was smoking marijuana.”

Charlamagne said Craig’s reaction was swift and definitive.

“And I remember Craig going (makes sniffing sound), ‘Is that marijuana? Charlamagne, I gotta go!’” he said, while Jenna and Sheinelle cracked up.

“And he got up and skedaddled out of the club. He was gone. He’s always been one of the most disciplined people I’ve ever known.”

Sheinelle said Craig often gets teased for being friends with someone as “cool” as Charlamagne tha God. Jenna added in that Craig would “be the first to admit he was a little bit of a nerd” as a well-known throwback picture of him holding a violin appeared on the screen.

“I got a picture worse than that,” the radio star jumped in to say.

“Back in the day when we were in Columbia, South Carolina, I was doing radio on Hot 103.9. He was on WIS, and there was a guy named Otis Taylor Jr. who wrote for the state newspaper, and he did like this ‘top 10 people in arts and entertainment in South Carolina under the age of 25.’ Me and Craig was in there, and Craig is laying in like a grassy knoll with a golden retriever licking his face.”

The thought of that image was too much for Jenna and Sheinelle.

“I will give you $12,” Sheinelle said.

Charlamagne said he has the picture “laminated somewhere,” which only piqued Jenna and Sheinelle’s interest further.

“Please find that,” Jenna said. “We will pay you $24.”
