Bruce Campbell has cancer, he says, telling fans ‘Fear not’

Bruce Campbell, โ€œThe Evil Deadโ€ actor who is a staple at fan conventions, says he will be taking his foot off the gas for a while as he gets treatment for an unspecified cancer.

โ€œ[T]hese days, when someone is having a health issue, itโ€™s referred to as an โ€˜opportunity,โ€™ so letโ€™s go with that โ€” Iโ€™m having one of those. Itโ€™s also called a type of cancer thatโ€™s โ€˜treatableโ€™ not โ€˜curable.โ€™ I apologize if thatโ€™s a shock โ€” it was to me too,โ€ the 67-year-old said Monday on social media.

โ€œThe good news is, Iโ€™m not gonna go into any more detail.โ€

What he did go into a little more detail about was his plan to accommodate treatment, which involves cutting out โ€œappearances and cons and work in generalโ€ while he gets the care he needs. Campbell said he has โ€œbig regretsโ€ over canceling several con appearances over the summer but noted, โ€œTreatment needs and professional obligations donโ€™t always go hand-in-hand.โ€

He said his plan is to get โ€œas well as I possibly canโ€ over the summer so he can promote his new movie โ€œErnie & Emmaโ€ this fall. The movie โ€” which he wrote, directed and stars in โ€” follows a widower as he scatters his wifeโ€™s ashes in very specific locations and deals with the memories that arise at each of them.

Campbellโ€™s place in the world of fandoms was cemented early on after he and buddy Sam Raimi partnered on the 1981 movie โ€œThe Evil Dead,โ€ which saw Campbell playing Ashley โ€œAshโ€ J. Williams and Raimi directing.

After teaming on two more movies in โ€œThe Evil Deadโ€ universe, Campbell, Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi delivered the TV series โ€œAsh vs. Evil Dead,โ€ which aired for three seasons on Starz, from 2015 into 2018.

Campbell also co-starred in the USA Network series โ€œBurn Notice,โ€ playing Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL and burned spy who hangs out with the seriesโ€™ lead character Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), a spy who as the series begins gets a โ€œburn noticeโ€ of his own. That one ran from 2007 to 2013.

Cutting to the present, Sam Raimiโ€™s daughter Emma appears as the character Tatyana in Campbellโ€™s โ€œErnie & Emma,โ€ as does another Raimi brother, Ted.

Campbell wrote Monday afternoon, โ€œIโ€™m not trying to enlist sympathy โ€” or advice โ€” I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will).

โ€œFear not,โ€ he added, โ€œI am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.โ€

Then he thanked โ€œthe greatest fans in the worldโ€ and said he hoped to see them soon.
