Bruce Campbell has cancer, he says, telling fans ‘Fear not’
Bruce Campbell, βThe Evil Deadβ actor who is a staple at fan conventions, says he will be taking his foot off the gas for a while as he gets treatment for an unspecified cancer.
β[T]hese days, when someone is having a health issue, itβs referred to as an βopportunity,β so letβs go with that β Iβm having one of those. Itβs also called a type of cancer thatβs βtreatableβ not βcurable.β I apologize if thatβs a shock β it was to me too,β the 67-year-old said Monday on social media.
βThe good news is, Iβm not gonna go into any more detail.β
What he did go into a little more detail about was his plan to accommodate treatment, which involves cutting out βappearances and cons and work in generalβ while he gets the care he needs. Campbell said he has βbig regretsβ over canceling several con appearances over the summer but noted, βTreatment needs and professional obligations donβt always go hand-in-hand.β
He said his plan is to get βas well as I possibly canβ over the summer so he can promote his new movie βErnie & Emmaβ this fall. The movie β which he wrote, directed and stars in β follows a widower as he scatters his wifeβs ashes in very specific locations and deals with the memories that arise at each of them.
Campbellβs place in the world of fandoms was cemented early on after he and buddy Sam Raimi partnered on the 1981 movie βThe Evil Dead,β which saw Campbell playing Ashley βAshβ J. Williams and Raimi directing.
After teaming on two more movies in βThe Evil Deadβ universe, Campbell, Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi delivered the TV series βAsh vs. Evil Dead,β which aired for three seasons on Starz, from 2015 into 2018.
Campbell also co-starred in the USA Network series βBurn Notice,β playing Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL and burned spy who hangs out with the seriesβ lead character Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), a spy who as the series begins gets a βburn noticeβ of his own. That one ran from 2007 to 2013.
Cutting to the present, Sam Raimiβs daughter Emma appears as the character Tatyana in Campbellβs βErnie & Emma,β as does another Raimi brother, Ted.
Campbell wrote Monday afternoon, βIβm not trying to enlist sympathy β or advice β I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will).
βFear not,β he added, βI am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.β
Then he thanked βthe greatest fans in the worldβ and said he hoped to see them soon.
