When a young Duolingo user lost his learning streak on the app due to some medical issues, the app stepped in to keep his winning record going strong.
A user on X, who goes by the handle @762cayuga, shared on the app Aug. 11 that her son had been βunexpectedly hospitalized,β causing him to lose a streak that had heβd held down for more than 300 days, and reached out for an assist.
For those unfamiliar with Duolingo, a streak, which is represented by a flame icon, signifies the number of consecutive days that a user has completed a lesson on Duolingo.
βAny chance you can help a little Duo fan out?β the parent asked on X. βHeβs home and recovering, but heartbroken about losing his streak. Any chance some Duo magic can restore it?β
The app responded on the social media platform and by the next morning, the young user was back to continuing his streak, the company confirmed.
βLetβs get that streak going again,β the company responded to the parent on X.
A spokesperson for Duolingo tells TODAY.com that the 10-year-old was quite the enthusiastic user, learning chess, music, Spanish and math on the app. In order to keep the streak going, the spokesperson adds, a user just needs to complete a lesson in any Duolingo course. So the boyβs streak wasnβt necessarily tied to any one subject, however the spokesperson shares that the child has been most active with chess.
In addition to the streak restoration, Duolingo also threw in some gems, the appβs own form of virtual currency, and a streak shield, which learners can use to protect their streak for up to seven days.
The move has received an outpouring of attention, including much love from some internet users who know just how crushing it can feel to lose a long-held streak.
βSeeing this tweet right after my husband finished his morning lesson,β one user wrote. βHe takes his streaks seriously too! Hope they are able to restore your sonβs and glad heβs on the mendβ
Not everyone received empathy from Duolingoβs infamously sassy owl mascot. After one user asked for their streak to be restored after a bad hangover caused a pause in practice, the app had one thing to say.
βget off my page,β the app responded on X.
Duolingo streaks have been the stuff of obsession for many app users. In fact, some have been photographed, keeping up their learning streaks in interesting circumstances like while at the club, or on the morning of their wedding day.
