Andrew Rannells is giving fans of โGirlsโ an inside look at what they may see when the showโs reboot comes out.
According to Rannells, the idea for the reboot grew after the launch of โGirlsโ star and creator Lena Dunhamโs book, โFamesick,โ earlier this year. Rannells said audiences during the book tour were โso excited to see us together on stage.โ
โI think (it) maybe kickstarted Lenaโs idea that, โI think maybe this is time,โ because we certainly didnโt want to come back before people were ready,โ he said Oct. 27 on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle.
Rannells, who played Elijah Krantz on โGirls,โ was asked if the reboot would have a different visual look from the original, like โBel-Airโ or โA Different World,โ or if it would appear similar to the original, like โSex and the City,โ leading him to opine about where the characters may be today.
โI think itโll look and sort of feel the same,โ he said. โBut, you know, when we left these characters, they were what about to be mid-20s, late 20s? Theyโre 40 now. So, now we have to sort of explore that. So I think itโs a good time. I think that she chose the right moment. So Iโm really excited.โ
Dunham announced the reboot of the Emmy-winning series in a video on Oct. 13 shared on HBO Maxโs social media accounts. In the clip, she hopped on a call with co-stars Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke.
โWe used to spend, like, every summer together, you know, doing this thing that we do, making the show. Is it something that you would want to do again? Are you free next summer?โ Dunham asked them.
Rannells, in the announcement, crashed the call to confirm heโd be joining the reboot.
โIโm in, but only โcause you trash cans need constant supervision,โ he joked.
โGirlsโ revolved around four 20-something friends living in New York City and ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. In a press release, HBO said production should get underway in 2027 and the show will take place a decade after the events of the final episode from Season 6.
โWe always said we would only return to โGirlsโ if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. Iโve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldnโt quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower,โ Dunham said in a statement.
Itโs unclear if Adam Driver, who played the romantic interest of Dunhamโs character, Hannah, will return. TODAY.com had reached out to him for a comment about the revival, but did not hear back.
