Britney Spears fans got an unexpected surprise in the form of a previously unreleased song from the pop icon.
On Oct. 9, Spears and her team dropped the song โSheโll Never Be Me,โ which was recorded for her 2001 self-titled third album โBritney.โ
The song comes weeks before the album celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special edition re-release, โBritney (25th Anniversary Edition),โ that includes songs from the vault.
โSheโll Never Be Meโ is a quintessential Britney Spears track with its bubblegum pop, early aughts sound, girl power lyrics and the singerโs signature girlish and gritty vocals.
The 3-minute track talks about a former lover who is now with someone that looks just like her.
โYou know Iโm one of a kind/Boy, whatโs this I see/Your girl, she looks just like me/Blond hair and dressed to a T,โ she begins. โYou tell me how can this be/Does she know I was the one/Who used to turn you on/But you donโt want to talk about it.โ
According to the songโs YouTube description, Spears is credited as the lyricist, associated performer and composer.
Her ex Justin Timberlake is also featured as a lyricist and composer, along with Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs. Riprock โnโ Alex G is a producer.
โSheโll Never Be Meโ is one of five new songs included in the โBritneyโ re-release, including โAm I a Sinner,โ โWhen I Say So,โ โMy Big Secretโ and โRight Now (Taste The Victory)โ from her 2002 Pepsi commercial.
Fans will get to hear the songs when โBritney (25th Anniversary Edition)โ is released on Nov. 6.
The last time Spears shared a new song was 2023โs โMind Your Businessโ with Will.i.am. In 2020, she also dropped a never-before-heard collaboration with the Backstreet Boys titled โMatches.โ
The song was featured in a deluxe edition of her 2016 album โGlory.โ
