Isiah Whitlock Jr. dead: ‘The Wire’ and ‘Veep’ actor dies
Isiah Whitlock Jr., best known for his role in HBOβs βThe Wireβ and his collaborations with director Spike Lee in films such as βBlacKkKlansmanβ and βDa 5 Bloods,β has died. He was 71.
Whitlockβs manager, Brian Liebman, shared news of his clientβs death in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
βIt is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr.,β Liebman wrote. βIf you knew him β you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.β
Liebman told Deadline that Whitlock died peacefully in New York after a short illness.
Born in South Bend, Ind., Whitlock had dreams of playing pro football. He told NPR in 2021 that, while playing at Southwest Minnesota State University, he got βbanged up … concussions, broken ankles.β
βTo me it just didnβt seem to make sense anymore. … I wandered by the theater department.β After nabbing a role in βThe Crucible,β he said heβd been βworking ever since.β
After graduating in 1976, Whitlock joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
At the start of his career, the actor picked up roles in procedurals and dramas, including iterations of the βLaw & Orderβ franchise, notably βLaw & Order: Special Victims Unitβ and βLaw & Order: Criminal Intent.β
He most famously left his mark on HBOβs βThe Wireβ as corrupt Maryland State Sen. Clay Davis, whose drawn-out, drawled profanity, βsβ,β became a memorable element of the 60-episode crime drama.
After brief appearances on multiple short-lived TV series, including Foxβs βNew Amsterdam,β ABCβs βThe Unusuals,β CBSβ βChaos,β and others, Whitlock made his HBO return with a recurring role on the political satire βVeepβ as George Maddox, the secretary of defense and presidential candidate.
Whitlock also appeared on CBS shows βThe Good Wife,β βElementary,β FXβs βLouie,β βAtlanta,β Foxβs βGotham,β NBCβs βThe Carmichael Showβ among many more. His final TV role was as Chief of Police Larry Dokes in Netflixβs 2025 mystery comedy drama βThe Residence.β
On the big screen, Whitlock appeared in the black comedy horror film βCocaine Bearβ in 2023, as well as multiple movies directed by Lee, including βShe Hate Meβ (2004), βChi-Raqβ (2015), βBlacKkKlansmanβ (2018) and βDa 5 Bloodsβ (2020).
The director shared a photo of the two on his Instagram account, writing, βToday I learned of the passing of my dear beloved brother Isiah Whitlock. God Bless.β
Whitlock is slated for two posthumous releases, the 2026 Pixar animated film βHoppersβ and the Irish American film βThe Body Is Water,β directed by Vicky Wight.
