Skims Faces Backlash For 8 Advent Calendar of Hair Ties, Other Small Accessories

Many shoppers who’ve purchased an advent calendar from Skims aren’t quite feeling the holiday spirit after seeing what’s inside.

Social media users are slamming the popular shapewear brand founded by Kim Kardashian for its $148 advent calendar. The calendar, which contains items like hair ties and Skims-branded bobby pins, prompted many to label the product a β€œscam” and the β€œworst advent calendar ever.”

β€œI’m hoping this is a prank and the last one is a $150 gift card for all my money back,” influencer Kayla Ryan said as she unboxed the calendar.

Another social media user compared the advent calendar to the odds and ends often found in the bottom of a purse.

β€œI can’t believe I’ve had a Skims Advent Calendar in the bottom of my purse for months, what a surprise,” the Threads user wrote.

Neither representatives for Kim Kardashian nor the Skims brand immediately responded to TODAY.com’s request for comment.

The calendar, which features 12 days of small surprises, is listed on the Skims website as an β€œaccessories advent calendar.” And the product, while pricey, is currently sold out with a waitlist.

According to the website, the contents include key chains, hair ties and scrunchies, clips, bobby pins and a compact mirror.

Since the product’s release, videos of shoppers, disappointingly unboxing the calendars have spread rapidly across the internet. One such video, posted on Nov. 5, has drawn more than 47.7 million views as of Nov. 7 afternoon.

Many criticized the calendar’s price tag, saying that the collection of products couldn’t possibly cost anywhere near the sale price.

β€œI just watched a girl on TikTok unwrap the SKIMS advent calendar and I’m actually offended 😭 $148 for THAT?! I know Kim didn’t put some hair ties, clips and keychains in a box, slap SKIMS on it and expect people to act like this is luxury. That box isn’t worth $20. Be serious. πŸ˜‚β€ one social media user wrote.

Others said that the calendar was poorly curated.

β€œFor SKIMS to be a CLOTHING brand and not include a single piece of clothing in the SKIMS advent Christmas calendar is crazy and ridiculous actually πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ 150$ for Bobby pins, scrunchies and tree ornaments WOW” another social media user wrote.

And a whole lot of people made jokes about it.

β€œThat Skims advent calendar looks like what I’d find on the floor if I pulled my headboard away from the wall,” one person wrote.

Another social media user joked, β€œEugh. My cat saw the skims advent calendar and won’t shut up about it. πŸ™„β€

There were, however, a couple people who weren’t so ready to rail against the company, pointing out that the Skims website was transparent about what was inside the calendar.

β€œIf the contents were disclosed, you ignored the description, spent $148, and then acted completely blindsided by what you received, some of that responsibility belongs to YOU,” another social media user said.
