2025 DGA nominations clarify Oscar race for best director

The Directors Guild of America announced its feature film nominees Wednesday, ahead of a ceremony on Feb. 8 to announce the winners.
The nominees are Jacques Audiard for βEmilia PΓ©rez,β Sean Baker for βAnora,β Edward Berger for βConclave,β Brady Corbet for βThe Brutalistβ and James Mangold for βA Complete Unknown.β
The DGA winner is among the most reliable indicators of a future Oscar win. Nineteen of the last 22 DGA awardees have gone on to win the Academy Award for directing. This is the first DGA recognition for all five of this yearβs nominees.
The nominees for the Michael Apted award for directorial achievement in a first-time theatrical feature are Payal Kapadia for βAll We Imagine as Light,β Megan Park for βMy Old Ass,β RaMell Ross for βNickel Boys,β Halfdan Ullmann TΓΈndel for βArmandβ and Sean Wang for βDidi.β
Last yearβs winners were, respectively, Christopher Nolan for βOppenheimerβ and Celine Song for βPast Lives.β
In the TV categories, announced Tuesday, the nominees for dramatic series are Alex Graves for βThe Diplomat,β Hiromi Kamata for βShΕgun,β Issa LΓ³pez for βTrue Detective: Night Country,β Frederick E.O. Toye for βShΕgunβ and Jonathan Van Tulleken for βShΕgun.β
The nominees for comedy series are Lucia Aniello for βHacks,β Ayo Edebiri for βThe Bear,β Duccio Fabri for βThe Bear,β Jeff Schaffer for βCurb Your Enthusiasmβ and Christopher Storer for βThe Bear.β
For movie for television and limited series, the nominees are Kevin Bray for βThe Penguin,β Alfonso CuarΓ³n for βDisclaimer,β Jennifer Getzinger for βThe Penguin,β Helen Shaver for βThe Penguinβ and Steven Zaillian for βRipley.β
The nominees for documentary are Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev for βPorcelain War,β Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie for βSugarcane,β Johan Grimonprez for βSoundtrack to a Coup dβEtat,β Ibrahim Nashβat for βHollywoodgateβ and Natalie Rae and Angela Patton for βDaughters.β
