2025 DGA nominations clarify Oscar race for best director


The Directors Guild of America announced its feature film nominees Wednesday, ahead of a ceremony on Feb. 8 to announce the winners.

The nominees are Jacques Audiard for β€œEmilia PΓ©rez,” Sean Baker for β€œAnora,” Edward Berger for β€œConclave,” Brady Corbet for β€œThe Brutalist” and James Mangold for β€œA Complete Unknown.”

The DGA winner is among the most reliable indicators of a future Oscar win. Nineteen of the last 22 DGA awardees have gone on to win the Academy Award for directing. This is the first DGA recognition for all five of this year’s nominees.

The nominees for the Michael Apted award for directorial achievement in a first-time theatrical feature are Payal Kapadia for β€œAll We Imagine as Light,” Megan Park for β€œMy Old Ass,” RaMell Ross for β€œNickel Boys,” Halfdan Ullmann TΓΈndel for β€œArmand” and Sean Wang for β€œDidi.”

Last year’s winners were, respectively, Christopher Nolan for β€œOppenheimer” and Celine Song for β€œPast Lives.”

In the TV categories, announced Tuesday, the nominees for dramatic series are Alex Graves for β€œThe Diplomat,” Hiromi Kamata for β€œShōgun,” Issa LΓ³pez for β€œTrue Detective: Night Country,” Frederick E.O. Toye for β€œShōgun” and Jonathan Van Tulleken for β€œShōgun.”

The nominees for comedy series are Lucia Aniello for β€œHacks,” Ayo Edebiri for β€œThe Bear,” Duccio Fabri for β€œThe Bear,” Jeff Schaffer for β€œCurb Your Enthusiasm” and Christopher Storer for β€œThe Bear.”

For movie for television and limited series, the nominees are Kevin Bray for β€œThe Penguin,” Alfonso CuarΓ³n for β€œDisclaimer,” Jennifer Getzinger for β€œThe Penguin,” Helen Shaver for β€œThe Penguin” and Steven Zaillian for β€œRipley.”

The nominees for documentary are Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev for β€œPorcelain War,” Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie for β€œSugarcane,” Johan Grimonprez for β€œSoundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” Ibrahim Nash’at for β€œHollywoodgate” and Natalie Rae and Angela Patton for β€œDaughters.”
